Art in History Review :: So You Call Yourself a Homeschooler?

Art in History

Art in History is a phenomenal new company that has cleverly put together hands-on, brain-based art kits to compliment teaching history. These hands-on art kits enhance your students understanding of a particular time period in history through pottery. On their FAQ page, The Art in History website explains why they have chosen pottery as the primary art medium:

Throughout history archaeologists have used pottery as a basis for dating the civilization and culture of the discovered site. Pottery had a utilitarian use and represented a prized possession used in everyday life. The face of the pottery was like a canvas in which the potters used to express themselves. Therefore the motifs represented the events of the day usually depicting politics, religion, the environment, and the day-to-day life of the time period.

What a clever way to uncover what the people of each time period in history were going through as a culture. I know this perspective had our 12-year-old, 8th grade daughter intrigued well before our kit arrived!

Early American Sugar Bowl Art Kit

For our review we chose the Early American Sugar Bowl. This project fit in perfectly for our daughter’s current study of the Moravian Potters. Because we just came back to the US from living in Germany for 3 years, this piece was of particular interest to our daughter. The kit comes with a sugar bowl, lid, paint set, paint brush, sponge, and two plates for the paint.

Hands on Learning

The art kit also came with a basic lesson plan that included some American history from the time period of 1800-1805. It also gave a historical background about the early American sugar bowl as well as sample motifs of finished bowls. The lesson was concluded with step-by-step painting instructions.

A Kinesthetic Learner’s Dream

This project is a great way for hands-on, kinesthetic learners to be able to express what they have learned about through art. While our daughter can learn through a variety of ways, I have found that when it comes to art combined with history, what she learns sticks better when she does a hands-on art project. Needless to say, this project really melded her love for history and art all-in-one making it a dream project for her. She is looking forward to doing more of these projects down the road.
