Scriptures to Pray for Your Future Spouse
Scriptures to Pray for Your Future Spouse
God calls us to pray about everything; yes, that includes praying for your future spouse. This may be something that is not talked about often, but it should be at the forefront of every single Christian’s mind who desires to be married.
Why? For starters, God cares about you and He especially cares about your future, right on down to your future spouse. Praying for your future spouse not only shows that you give Him ultimate control over that area of your life, but it also preps your heart for the one you say, “I do” to. Below are seven key areas and Scriptures to pray for (and confess over) your future spouse.
Pray for Their Salvation
“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you
believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”
Romans 10:9-10
Salvation as described in the Scripture above may seem like an easy thing. You may even think that by pursuing another Christian as your future spouse, that all will be well in this area. Even though it appears that way, it is still important to ask the Father to secure your spouses’ salvation. Also declare that he or she would walk out their salvation on a daily basis.
Pray for Healthy and Strong Faith
“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.”
Hebrews 11:6
As you pray for your future spouse to have a healthy and strong faith, ask the Father to enlarge their belief in Him, His Word, and His promises. Having a spouse with a strong faith walk, he/she will understand what it means to seek the Father, rely totally upon Him, and put Him first. Confess over your spouse that their faith be a shield of protection.
Pray for Emotional Wholeness
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends
all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6-7
Emotional wholeness has its roots embedded in trust. With this in mind, as you pray for your future spouse to have this attribute, confess that he/she will trust God with everything and not be controlled by situations, circumstances, negative emotions, and the like. Pray that they would cry out to the Father when needed, and always pursue emotional stability.
Pray for Sexual Purity
“Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.”
1 Corinthians 6:18
Sexual purity is typically another untalked about area, but it is definitely worth praying for and over your future spouse. As you pray that they would flee from sexual immorality, also confess restoration and protection over them. Declare that he/she would be sexually pure in mind and body, and that their desire would be for you alone.
Pray for Financial Freedom
“Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.”
Romans 13:8
Finances are one of the biggest reasons why married couples have disagreements. It is imperative to pray that you and your future spouse would commit your finances to God. Confess that he/she will be a good steward of all the Father gives, and pray that your future spouse will desire to learn to live free of burdensome debt.
Pray for Physical Health
“…and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all.”
Luke 6:19
While praying for your future spouse, it is perfectly okay to confess that they would be (and remain) in good health. The vows most couples recite at their ceremony include “in sickness and in health”, so praying that they would be healthy is a plus. Also confess that they would see their worth through the Father, and understand how important it is to take care of themselves physically.
Pray for a Humble Heart
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves…”
Philippians 2:3
Pray for your future spouse to be a man or woman of humbleness and integrity. Confess that he/she would not be tempted by selfish ambition, and that they would see others more valuable than themself. Declare that they would find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man because of their good actions.
These are just a few Scriptures and ways you can pray for your future spouse. We recommend keeping a prayer journal of some sort for your future spouse, and add to it as you think of more ways to pray for him/her. Trust and believe that your prayers are heard and that you will be blessed with the spouse God has for you.
