Curriculum, Curriculum, Come See What We’re Using This Year! 2011-2012
Curriculum. This seems to be the favorite topic of discussion for most homeschooling families this time of year. Whether you are just now starting back to school or if you school year round like we do – choosing the right curriculum for your children every year can be tricky! I have learned over the last 7 years of actually purchasing homeschooling materials, that each child is entirely different as are the needs of each child year-to-year. I am more than confident in choosing what is right for our children and just so grateful for the opportunity to educate them at home!
This is our line up for the new year:
“Princess” (10):
Rod and Staff Grade 5 Language Arts Combo Set
This is our first year using Rod & Staff for complete Language Arts. We are really looking forward to the built in character training – and at her age – we’ll take all we can get! You can go HERE to check it out.
Horizons 5 Math
This is our 5th year using Horizons Math and Princess LOVES it!

My Father’s World
Exploring Countries And Cultures
History & Geography/Art/Music/Bible
This is our first year using My Father’s World and are so excited to have a curriculum that ALL of the children can use at the same time!

Power-Glide German
This is our first year using Power-Glide for German as we are living in Germany and we LOVE it!

Science
For science this year we are only doing experiments based on the children’s interests. This will suit us well this year as we are soaking up lots of field trips while living overseas.

Hooked on Phonics Learn To Read Kindergarten Complete
Our son LOVES this CD Rom based curriculum. He has begun to read
many words now and is having a lot of fun! You can find it HERE.
This is our “core” line up BUT, we supplement like CRAZY!! Hope you are all having fun getting ready to start off fresh for school!

I did ECC last year, and really enjoyed it. Remember that there is also a lot of science built into ECC – your learn about biomes and habitats as you go from country to country. Also, don't be afraid to tweak for your youngers – using book basket books if the main texts are tricky at times. I hope you have a great experience. :^)
We use Rod & Staff too. I almost got MFW, but went with something else for History. Have a wonderful year!
I have never heard of Power-Glide before thanks for sharing. We have finally broke away from BJU DVD which has served us well in the past but as the years progressed I found myself substituting others subjects. This year am very excited to begin "America the Beautiful" by Notgrass which includes Literature; Shurley Grammar Level; Apologia Science; Teaching Textbooks Math on Computer; and lots of field trips around this area of Florida.

I've been a Classical Conversations mom for the past six years. This year, we're breaking out and focusing on some specific skill development (my son has a learning disorder that makes communication skills — reading and writing — difficult).
I'm actually getting the most help from — gasp!!! — his older brother's high school teachers!!! Seriously. My older son is a senior in public school. His favorite English teacher is tutoring my homeschooled son in literature analysis and writing. My older son's US History teacher has given us great history books to read — biographies at the early high school level and also period books. We use Teaching Textbooks for Algebra — used Horizon when he was younger.
The last big thing we're doing is preparing for a mission trip in the spring. He'll be researching the country and learning some basic words in their native language.
It's an exciting year for us. I'm thankful for all the help being generously given. Truly, we are blessed!
