A Single Girl Book Review {& Giveaway}
I had no training or teaching about how to live as a single Christian girl growing up. My mom didn’t sit down with me for Titus 2 instruction or conversations. It has been a struggle going through life without some real guidance especially as I am making the transition back into singleness. When I heard that Ashley was writing a book being a single Christian woman I was really interested to read it. I wasn’t sure if the book would be relevant to me as a divorced single woman in her 30’s but boy was I wrong.
Season of Singleness
Ashley shares her heart lots of encouragement for any woman in a season of singleness. She takes on the myths of being single and some of the cliches that fly around the christian singles circuit. She teaches how to enjoy the season and how to best serve God with your time and energy. She deals with some tough issues like contentment, entitlement (to a husband) and feeling/being treated like a second class Christian because of your relationship status. Ashley keeps it real and encourages your heart with scriptures from the Bible.
While You’re Waiting
Some my favorite parts of this book were the chapters that talk about preparing for the future and being busy for God. Ashley challenges you to think outside of the “everyone must go to college” box and to truly seek your purpose and identity in Christ. There’s no judgment, no pressure just love and encouragement to follow the course that God has set before you. She even gives some wonderful ideas for jobs and ministries where a single woman can serve, learn and grow. And there’s even a chapter on beauty that is just wonderful!
What to do About Boys
Ashley handles this topic with grace and love. On her blog Ashley is very open and honest about her relationships and heartaches and it’s the same with this book. She encourages single women to treat the opposite sex the way God intended . . . as brothers in Christ. I love the advice that she gives about getting to know boys and serving together as a way to foster friendship and fellowship. And she gives wonderful advice about dating/courting and purity.
This is a book that I wish I had read in my teens. It might have saved me some stupid mistakes and heartache. That said I still learned a lot from Ashley that I have been applying to my life right now.
