A Mom's New Year's Resolutions

We are at the time of year that we make lots of resolutions.  I know that for many people those resolutions come in the form of losing weight.  We hear all about losing weight and joining gyms this time of year.

But as a homeschooling family what are your resolutions for the coming year?  A lot of us are in the middle of the school year.  So we are not necessarily looking at new curriculum but looking at finishing what we ordered last year.  Here are some of my resolutions that may be of some help for you.

1.  Not be as busy – Have you found that you have more writing on that calendar than you really want or need? My family has things planned 3 nights out of the week. This does not include any extras that we may want to do with church events, friends inviting the kids over, birthday celebrations. Sometimes my schedule is really full during the week and I wonder how I am going to get all of this done. I think that I really need to see how this is for the good of the entire family BEFORE I write another event on my calendar. This one is a tough one.

2. Be in the moment more – I know that for me when I have the schedule of tasks that we need to get done in school, the calendar of events, and just the normal everyday taking care of responsibilities – I forget to be in the moment. I get overwhelmed and then I get short with my kids. I don’t want to look back on my days and see a frazzled mom but one that truly enjoys being with my children. Sometimes that may mean that my house is not as clean as I would like but I will have happy messy memories.

3. Make memories – Again, I tend to get overwhelmed with life. I need to loosen up and laugh more with my children. I want to laugh more, tell silly jokes and cook more with my children. I want to sit and listen to all those stories that don’t seem to have an ending but are important to my children. Again, I think that this goes back to being in the moment more with my children.

4.  Schedules – I will be taking a hard look at our school schedule.  I know that there are areas that need improvement. I like the curriculum we are using it is just that sometimes the order of our day needs some adjustment. So I will be looking at where we can make adjustments.

These are my resolutions as a mom that also homeschools.

  1. These are good resolutions, especially the making memories one. It’s hard remember to be in the moment, because I tend to live by “my list”. It’s great to slow down. Thanks for the reminders 🙂
