I Was Giving Her Time
I am often reminded that our children want us to invest in their lives. They don’t tell us that in those words but that is what they desire. Our children want to be seen, to be heard, to be loved by their parents.
I have two children and a husband that is gone a lot on business. When you are the parent that is staying home to homeschool, to cook meals, to take children to their dance classes, to prepare for those speech therapists that are coming to your home; life can get exhausting. We all have those days that are exhausting. I am reminded daily that my children need me. They need me to set aside the computer and the lessons and focus on them. I am reminded that sometimes during school when my daughter chases those rabbit trails, it is okay to follow her. I am amazed what I hear her telling me when I give her some room. I hear her trying to make sense of the world that she lives in.
My daughter recently celebrated her seventh birthday. One of her birthday presents was a knitting loom. I wanted to get her something that we could do together. I didn’t realize what I was really doing by giving her that present. I was giving her time with her mom. Time where we could sit and knit in our “Knitting Club” and just talk about everything. She could tell me things that are important to her. Those topics don’t have to be deep but the mere fact that they are important to her means they are important to me, too. This has been a time where we get to sit down and “relax” and just be with each other. I don’t think that knitting is something that she LOVES to do, but I do think that she LOVES to spend time with her mom.
These times are the important times in our life where we invest in our children. Each child craves something different and we have to figure out how to invest in our children.
