8 Ways to Find Joy in Your Marriage

Could you use some help to find joy in your marriage again? When life gets tough (and we all know it will), it’s easy to lose sight of some of the joys in life. When you’re forever running…to work, soccer practice, piano lessons and home again, there never seems to be enough time to stop and smell the roses. Finding joy in your marriage won’t make life any less busy, but it will make it that much sweeter. Here are 8 ways to find joy in your marriage.

1. Start Each Day with Gratitude

It’s easy to hit the ground running as soon as you hear the alarm. When the first thing that you do is head for your coffee and head to the shower, it sets a tone of running the minute that you wake up. Try sitting down with your cup of coffee and thinking of one reason that you are grateful for your spouse. You may choose to keep a journal of your daily thoughts, or simply make it a mental activity. Regardless of the approach that you take, it will help you to focus on the many reasons you have for being joyful in your marriage.

2. Do the Mundane Tasks Together

When you’re a busy person, there’s not much fun about cleaning the house and making dinner unless you do it together. Turn on the music and work together on completing the not-as-fun parts of your day. Not only will it go faster, but it will be a more fun way to spend the time.

3. Celebrate (Even the Small Things)

When you think about it, you have plenty of reasons to celebrate: That promotion at work, paid off the car, making to Friday. Whatever the occasion, celebrating everything together and enjoying each other’s company while you celebrate your successes will help keep joy in the center of your marriage.

4. Take Pictures (and Look at Them)

If you’re like us, there are LOTS of pictures of our early years. As time went on, though, there were fewer pictures of us and lots of our family. We’ve started taking pictures together on each anniversary and every time we go out of town. Making a point of taking pictures together on a regular basis and making a photo book or album of your marriage over the years is a fun way to go back and see how far you’ve come.

5. You’re Never too Busy for a Hug and Kiss

Even when life gets hectic, stopping long enough for a quick hug and kiss before you run out the door will help you both remember what your priorities are and that your marriage is the foundation for all that you do. This small token of affection can go a long way when starting off your day. We never miss the opportunity to say goodbye with a hug and kiss each day when going our separate ways. We encourage you not to neglect this simple yet powerful tool for connection.

6. Fill Your Office with Pictures

Whether you have your own office, simply a desk or work from home, fill your work space with pictures of your spouse and family. That way, if the stressors of work seem to be zapping your joy, the visual reminders of your marriage and kids will help restore it.

7. Go on Dates

Date night is so important for couples of all stages! It helps you to add romance back into your marriage and focus on just the two of you. Date night doesn’t have to be elaborate…just time for the two of you to get away from it all, connect your hearts, and create time to re-center your marriage. Many “dates” for us have been stay-at-home dates after the children go to sleep.

8. Grow and Pray Together

Each of us grows each and every day. That being said, why not work at growing together? Find a book on marriage and relationships and read it together. Not only will it help you to build your relationship, it will also give you some added time together, making the learning fun.

Similarly, praying with your spouse will help you to find joy in your relationship. Bringing your fears, hopes and happiness to God together will help you to remain focused on each other and the One that brought you together.
