Why You Need to Eat When You Want to Lose

By Jenna K. | February 26, 2014

Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?  For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NKJV) It doesn’t make sense. I hardly ever eat. And yet, I’m gaining weight. Granted, when I do eat, it’s not always healthy food that I’m sticking in my face. But calories are calories, right? It would make sense to me that if I’m not eating a lot of food, I shouldn’t be gaining weight. So why isn’t it working that way?I attended a View Post

5 Diet Changes to Start Eating Healthier Today

By Jenna K. | January 27, 2014

The word "diet" has become synonymous with torture. Deprivation. Punishment. We go on a diet, try fad diets, and ultimately blow our diets. It doesn't have to be this way. On a rudimentary level, our diet is simply what we eat. Whatever you eat on any random day of the week is your diet. Your diet may be sort of healthy, or nothing that could remotely pass for healthy. Regardless, if you consume food (and I would imagine that you do)  you are "on a diet".Nutrition is about 50% of the healthy-diet-and-exercise touted as being necessary for achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. In Lieu of New Year’s Resolutions (setting realistic fitness goals)

By Jenna K. | December 23, 2013

It's creeping up on us again, isn't it? There are just a few little squares left on the calendar, counting down to that morning when we toss out that calendar marked with the birthdays, doctor's appointments, dance recitals, and baseball games from the past twelve months, and move on to one containing fresh, blank pages. Unadulterated squares, holding the promise of busy and overwhelming, memory-making days to come. This is generally the time when we look over those calendar pages and figure out when we're going to fit in those things that are important to us. Will we travel to visit family View Post

When You Can’t See the Wind

By Jenna K. | November 20, 2013

This morning was my long run. I say that as if I always go on a long run on Saturday mornings, which is entirely not true. The plan had been to meet some girlfriends for a run downtown. See, we're running in a relay together in a few weeks, and we were going to run the course together. But when I turned on my alarm for 0500, I neglect to remember that the 0500 setting is for Monday through Friday only (iPhone problems), and I didn't wake up until minutes before I was supposed to meet the girls.Still, I managed a long run. Okay, for me, 4.5 miles is a long run. The route I take is a very View Post

What is in Your Food?

By Jenna K. | October 28, 2013

All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me,but not all things edify. Let no one seek his own, but each one the other’s well-being. 1 Corinthians 10:32 (NKJV)  It was our first science fair project. My 5th grader, being definitely my child, decided to do his science project on ice cream. We tested four different brands of ice cream to determine which would melt the quickest at room temperature. Once we figured out which brand melted the quickest, we started looking at the ingredients of each. Most of the ingredients were pretty basic: milk, View Post

Back Pain Fixes for Every Body

By Jenna K. | September 13, 2013

You know you’re getting old when you start complaining about your aching back.It was last summer when it hit me—my back wasn’t hurting any more. I have had mid and lower back pain forever. I was constantly twisting around, trying to pop my back, hoping that one of the little cracking noises would offer more than a moment of relief. It was easy to blame my back pain on my sorry little temporary twin mattress. But despite no changes to my mattress, my back felt great! For me, I typically get lower, lower back pain just before my period. It’s about the only PMS symptom I’ve consistently had. View Post

Dump Your Good Intentions

By Jenna K. | August 16, 2013

Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. 1 Corinthians 9:24 (NKJV)We've all heard about good intentions, and people often talk about living intentionally. What does that mean, exactly?I fully intended to eat healthy today. With a crazy work schedule, I know that I also function better when I eat healthy food, and I crash and burn when I succumb to the ease of the drive-thru diet. However, I did not back up my intentions with actions that would help me to achieve my desired end-state. I shopped for healthy View Post

Getting Real About Obstacles to Weight Loss

By Jenna K. | July 15, 2013

"My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him." Psalm 62:5There are major physiological obstacles to weight loss that no one ever wants to talk about. Why? Because it's uncomfortable. Ladies, can we get real about our bodies for a moment?I love watching The Biggest Loser. It's extreme weight loss, to be sure. But it underscores the principal that diet, exercise, and concerted effort are all you need to lose weight. The show features both men and women, and without fail, the men always lose more weight more quickly than do the women. No biggie. Men's bodies are just View Post

The True Reason

By Carlie Kercheval | June 18, 2013

Okay, today is the day.  Today is the day that I am going to start eating right. Well, I am going to start with eating just meat and I will exercise five days a week.  Forget the fact that I am 100 pounds overweight and I have rheumatoid arthritis.  I am going to do this.  Oh yeah, I have to find away around this anemia, too.  Regardless, today is the day.So what should I eat for breakfast?  I will start my day off with some bacon and eggs, because eggs are considered a meat, right?  Oh, I don’t have either one of those; well, I will just eat some tuna then. Oh wait, I haven’t been to the View Post
