The 3 R’s of Maintaining Your Goals
The 3 R’s of Maintaining Your Goals
It’s been a long time since January. Life has changed. We’ve gone from the snowy cold of winter to the rising temps of late spring. The kids are about to finish the school year, if they haven’t already, and life has taken on a whole new shine.
So, how are you doing on those goals we set back at the beginning of the year?
Are you hanging in there? Maybe you have that sense of accomplishment that comes with a job well done.
Maybe you’ve completely forgotten and are wondering what in the world I’m talking about!
No matter what category you fall into, the end of the month is always a good time to step back and look at where you stand. So, let’s pull out those goals and go over the 3 R’s of maintaining our goals.
Review:
We all know the best way to keep track of our goals is to write them down and then put them in a place where we can see them on a daily basis. However, much like the family picture hanging in the hallway, after so long the goals go unnoticed. So we need to work time into our schedule to review the goals on a regular basis.
After we make our goals at the beginning of the year, we need to break them down into small chunks that can be accomplished over a month. Therefore, we should be reviewing the monthly goals and making a plan of action. Then, as we look ahead to each week, we should be working the goals into our daily schedule. Bit by bit until the goals are accomplished!
Reevaluate:
Now, sometimes the goals we set have too high of expectations. Maybe we tried to accomplish too much in too short of time (that’s usually the big one). Sometimes life gets in the way and we have to put stuff off. Sometimes we don’t have the means to accomplish something the way it needs to be. Whatever the reason, we have to step back and reevaluate the goal. How does it need to change? What do we need to do to make this goal attainable?
Recommit:
And then, with each mile marker, we need to recommit to the goals. We need to look over them and remember why we wanted to accomplish them in the first place. Why are they important? How will we benefit from finishing this goal?
Sometimes, we completely slide off track. It happens to all of us. Life gets in the way. We lose our passion and enthusiasm. We don’t review our goals on a regular basis and then forget about them.
There’s no time like the present to recommit.
Go back to the start. Set your priorities and evaluate the changes you want to make. Then start setting goals. Be precise. Write them down. Make a commitment.
No one needs to go through all of this alone! Find someone to help hold you accountable. Your spouse. A friend. A family member. Even an online forum. Find someone who won’t shirk, who will keep you on your toes.
And above all, remember to keep God in the equation. He wants to help you. He’s always just a prayer away.
So, as we head into the sixth month of the year, let’s use the 3 R’s of maintaining our goals to help us grab the day by the horns and make it the most productive yet!
