Managing Your Blessings

For those of you who are currently homeschooling high school students or will be next year, I have some exciting news for you! Bright Ideas Press, one of our favorite homeschool curriculum publishers, is coming out with a brand new curriculum for high school students – North Star Geography.

As a military homeschooling family, geography is a natural part of our lives. From moving all over the world to my husband deploying several times – our family is always exploring new geographical locations in real life and using maps. You can imagine how excited I was to become a brand ambassador for Bright Ideas Press to help spread the word about this new and exciting geography curriculum.

Did you know that geography is one of the most under taught subjects in today’s schools? Yes, it’s true. It is ironic that this valuable subject is under taught considering that geography is something that we encounter each and every day of our lives.

Our daughter already started delving into North Star Geography and has fallen in love. She enjoys the way each lesson is comprised with information relevant to the type of geography being addressed (either physical or human). She really likes how there are interesting facts along with historical relevance mixed in with lots of different types of maps. She is also enjoying the multiple choices for various hands-on projects to do with each lesson. Her favorite part of the course thus far is, “All of it.” Since we are just beginning our journey with this text, we will be giving you some more up-to-date information as we get a little further along!

As a parent I am really enjoying the ease of planning and the plethora of relevant information. The book comes with a teacher’s introduction that breaks down the various elements of the course:

  • The Reader
  • Hands-On Activities
  • Building Your Own Atlas
  • Note-taking Pages
  • Memorization Lists
  • Research Questions
  • Quizzes and Tests
  • Vocabulary
  • Graphic Organizers
  • and Reference Materials/Booklist

Next the author, Tyler Hogan, gives us a great list of schedule options that you can tailor to suit your own homeschooling needs. Whether you homeschool year round or traditional schedule, you will find a plan that suits your student’s need.

Look for another post about North Star Geography in the near future as we’ll be sharing more about our wonderful journey with this amazing new product!
