How to be a Happy Married Couple
Finding ways to be a happy married couple isn’t hard, you just have to know where to look. Keep in mind that your own personal happiness plays a part in whether or not you can be a happy married couple. Keep this in mind if you start to feel like your marriage is less than stellar.
1. Forgive one another
This is huge. To be a happy married couple, you need to learn how to forgive one another. This may be one of the most difficult things to do depending on what you’ve been through. But holding onto anger or grudges isn’t helpful or healthy to anyone involved.
If you are unable to work through forgiving one another just between you two, we highly recommend seeking outside help in your marriage. Having an unbiased listener will help you see things from the outside looking in. This outside perspective helps gives you the ability to work through unforgiveness and hurt.
2. Take time to laugh together
Sometimes, all it takes for simple happiness is a silly joke and a smile. Life is too short to take too seriously. So when the times comes to let down your hair and smile, do so! More than likely, your spouse will find comfort in your laughter. And who knows…you two may be crying from laughter in no time!
As the Bible says in Proverbs 17:22:
A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.
So let’s work hard to keep joy at the center of our marriage. This joy Scripture journal and printable Scripture cards are a great way to keep joy at the forefront of your marriage!
3. Enjoy the little things
Not every action, gift, or thought has to be out of a fairy tale love story. And honestly, who really has time for that? Being a happy married couple involves being thankful for the little things in your relationship. Those little details can truly add up to real happiness.
Here are some little things that we enjoy:
- having consecrated conversations
- doing outdoor activities
- praying together
- kissing
- romantic time at home
- sitting in the backyard by the fire
4. Know the difference between sarcasm and friendly banter
There may be times in your marriage that you and your spouse take time to have some friendly banter back and forth. And if that is your “thing”, that’s fine.
Just be aware that you need to be careful with your words when bantering. Friendly banter can quickly cross over into sarcasm and hurtful words to your spouse.
The key to successful banter? Make certain each of you are in the mindset to banter back and forth. If it’s a rough or stressful day, find another way to lighten the mood with your spouse.
5. Don’t forget date nights
Married couples need to have date nights! In fact, date nights are more important now than they were before you were married! Seriously! You have to make time to love and connect, and what better way than with fun dates?
Don’t allow anything to make you reschedule or put date nights aside. You and your spouse need time alone to grow your relationship. By making date night a priority, you will continue on the path towards being a happy married couple.
Every time that someone tells you that marriage is hard work, change your thought process a bit. Yes, marriage is hard work. But it’s also one of the most rewarding “jobs” out there! Getting to spend your life with your best friend, your partner, and your soulmate sounds a lot less like work and a lot more like fun!
The key to being a happy married couple? Put your marriage above all other relationships and nurture it each and every day. That way, you know exactly what you need to focus on to ensure that your marriage is strong and growing day after day.
